Short answer
Six or seven digits, for most adults. In a study of 763 adults the average was 6.35 digits, and anything from five to eight is ordinary. The famous “seven” is a rule of thumb about chunks of information, not a hard ceiling.
You already know the experience. Someone reads out a phone number, you repeat it back fine, and thirty seconds later it is gone. That short window is what a digit span measures.
What the research actually found
The clearest modern figure comes from a study of 763 adults aged 18 to 65. Their average forward span was 6.35 digits, with a spread of about one digit either side. So most people sat between five and eight, and eight was already better than roughly nine people in ten.
The stop rule matters as much as the number. In that study a run ended when someone missed the same length twice, which is exactly how our digit span test works — otherwise the scores would not be comparable.
Where the famous seven came from
“Seven plus or minus two” entered common knowledge from a 1956 paper about the limits of immediate memory. Its point was subtler than the number suggests: the limit applies to chunks of information, and what counts as one chunk depends on what you already know.
Later work put the number of genuinely independent items lower — closer to four — and showed that people do better when items are grouped rather than held as one long string. Digits land at six or seven precisely because they are easy to group.
Why grouping is not cheating
Almost everyone who scores well is grouping. Instead of holding nine separate digits, you hold three small pieces: 481, 726, 359. That is three chunks, not nine, and it fits.
Reading the digits under your breath as they appear works for the same reason: it keeps them in a form that is easy to refresh. Neither trick is against the rules, and the reference sample did the same things.
Does it matter whether you hear the digits or see them?
It does, and it is worth knowing before you compare yourself with a published figure. The 763-adult study read the digits aloud through headphones and had an examiner write down what people said back. Our test shows them on screen and takes typed input.
Those are not identical tasks: hearing a list and seeing one recruit slightly different habits, and typing gives you a moment that speaking does not. Expect a small shift in either direction, and treat the percentile as a good indication rather than a measurement.
Can you get better at it?
At the task, yes — most people gain roughly a digit over their first several runs, mostly by grouping more deliberately and settling into the rhythm of the presentation. Then it flattens.
What that improvement is not is a general memory upgrade, and this site makes no such claim. You have got better at holding lists of digits for a few seconds, which is exactly as narrow as it sounds.
What changes your span
- Noise and interruptions — a single notification mid-sequence usually costs a digit
- Whether the digits are spoken or shown on screen; they are not identical tasks
- How much you use numbers day to day
- Tiredness, and doing the test twice in a row without a break
How many numbers can the average person hold in their head?

Is it true that you can only remember seven things?
Not as a law. Seven is a rule of thumb for chunks, and modern estimates for unrelated items are lower — around four. Digits beat that figure because they group easily, which is why digit span sits higher than the item limit suggests.
Is there a limit to how much the brain can hold?
For this kind of immediate, unrehearsed holding, yes, and it is small. Long-term memory is a different system with no comparable ceiling — which is why you can know thousands of phone numbers over a lifetime but not hold two of them in mind at once.
What a span does not tell you
It is a snapshot of one narrow skill on one day. It is not an intelligence score, it is not a memory assessment, and no result here says anything about your health. If your own memory has changed in a way that worries you, that is a conversation for a doctor rather than for a website.
Measure yours
Digits appear one per second, you type them back, and the list grows until you miss the same length twice. A run takes two or three minutes: try the digit span test, or the Schulte table if you would rather test attention than memory.
