These tests are for curiosity and self-comparison. They are not medical instruments, they do not screen for or diagnose any condition, and no result here says anything about your health. If something about your memory or concentration worries you, talk to a doctor rather than to a website.

What this test is

A five by five grid with the numbers 1 to 25 scattered across it. You find them in order, as fast as you can, ideally keeping your eyes near the middle and letting the edges of your vision do the searching.

It is the oldest and simplest attention exercise on this site, and the one people usually recognise on sight. Wrong taps are counted but do not add time — the clock is honest about how long the hunt took.

How to take it

Press Start and the clock begins with the first grid. Tap or click each number in turn; the number you need next is shown above the grid, and cells you have already found fade out.

  • Try to hold your gaze near the centre instead of scanning row by row. That is the point of the exercise.
  • On a phone the grid fills the width of the screen, so it works with a thumb.
  • It also works from the keyboard: Tab moves between cells and Enter selects one.

Why there is no percentile here

Figures like "40 to 50 seconds is normal" circulate widely for this grid, and we could not trace any of them to a study that measured it. Publishing a number whose origin we cannot show would be dressing up a guess as data, so we do not.

What the page does instead is keep your own attempts in your browser and show your best one. That comparison is the meaningful one anyway: it holds your screen, your device and your eyesight constant, which no external table can do.

What changes your time

Screen size matters more than most people expect — a large monitor forces real eye movement, while a phone fits in one glance. Grid layout luck matters too: sometimes consecutive numbers land next to each other and the run flies.

Practice on the same device makes times drop over the first several attempts and then flatten. That flattening is normal and is not a sign that anything is wrong.

Variants you may have seen

The five by five grid is the common one, but larger versions exist — six by six and seven by seven — and they are a different task rather than a harder version of the same one, because a bigger grid no longer fits inside one glance.

There are also two-colour grids, where you go up through one colour and down through the other at the same time. That version is mostly a test of switching between two rules, and it is slow for everyone the first few times. This page keeps the plain five by five so that your attempts stay comparable with each other.

What it does not measure

This is a search task on a grid of numbers, and that is all. It does not measure intelligence, it does not measure how well you concentrate at work, and it cannot detect or rule out any condition.

Questions

What is a good time for a Schulte table?

Honestly, nobody can tell you with a source behind it. Times on a phone are typically much shorter than on a large monitor simply because everything is inside one glance. Use your own history rather than someone else’s round number.

Do wrong taps add a penalty?

No. They are counted and shown next to your time so you can see how clean the run was, but nothing is added to the clock.

Should I move my eyes or keep them still?

Keeping your gaze near the centre is the traditional way to do it and usually the faster one once you get used to it. Scanning row by row works, but tends to be slower.

Is a new grid generated every time?

Yes. Every attempt shuffles the numbers, so you cannot learn one layout.

Where are my attempts stored?

In your own browser only. They survive a reload, stay on your device, and are never sent anywhere.
