People rarely ask this in the abstract. They ask after a test hands them a number with no context, next to a leaderboard full of results that look impossibly fast. So here is the context.

Where 250 sits among other people

The most useful comparison comes from a study that measured simple visual reaction time in 1,469 adults aged 18 to 65. The typical result was 231 milliseconds, and most results landed between about 190 and 280.

Your screen and your mouse are part of that number

A browser test does not measure only you. The screen takes time to actually show the colour it was told to show, and the mouse or keyboard takes time to get your click back to the page. Both delays land inside your result.

On a computer with a monitor that usually adds something in the range of 10 to 50 milliseconds, and on some televisions considerably more. Someone who scores 250 on a laptop might score noticeably better on a gaming monitor without getting any faster.

Why one site says 250 and another says 210

Tests differ in where they start and stop the clock, and some subtract an assumed hardware delay while others report the raw number. Two sites can measure the same person honestly and disagree by tens of milliseconds.

So comparing your score between sites tells you almost nothing, while comparing your own runs on one device tells you a lot. The device delay is the same every time, so it cancels out.

What moves your number from day to day

Sleep is the big one, and so is where you are in your day. Caffeine, how warm your hands are, trackpad versus mouse, and how many browser tabs are chewing through your processor all shift the result by amounts comparable to the gap between percentiles.

Age moves it too, but slowly: across large samples reaction time drifts later by a fraction of a millisecond per year. Comparing yourself with a mixed-age group is a rough exercise by design.

What the number does not tell you

Simple reaction time is a narrow physical measurement: one signal, one response, no decision to make. It is not a measure of intelligence, attention span or memory, and no result here says anything about your health.

Is 300 milliseconds slow?

It is slower than most adults in the reference sample, but one run of 300 is weak evidence. A distraction, a sticky mouse button or a moment of drift produces that number easily. Do five runs across a couple of days before believing any figure.

Why does my reaction time fluctuate so much?

Because everything around the measurement moves: sleep, time of day, caffeine, input device, screen and background processes. Run-to-run swings of several tens of milliseconds are normal, which is why a median of five attempts is more informative than any single click.
